A woman hairstylist in the Bengali film and television industry has allegedly attempted suicide, citing career sabotage by a powerful lobby in the technicians' association which has prevented her from securing work since May. The incident was reported by the police on Sunday.
Moments before her attempt on late Saturday evening, she recorded a voice statement and a handwritten note, naming 10 individuals allegedly responsible for her dire situation. A police complaint has since been lodged.
The Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India, the overarching body of technicians and directors, has committed to investigating her allegations.
The stylist reportedly set herself on fire using kerosene at her home but was saved by her family. She is currently being treated in a state-run hospital.
She accused influential members of the Cine and Video Hairstylist Association of treating her vindictively and blocking her from participation in projects, causing severe financial strain. According to her statements, her family has been struggling for months.
An industry source claimed she was suspended on May 1 for alleged insubordination and indiscipline and was free to pursue projects post suspension. Actor Sreelekha Mitra and Sudipta Chakraborty have expressed their solidarity, while the Federation's president, Swarup Biswas, promised an investigation.
