The Punjab government on Saturday announced its initiative to market state-produced silk products under an official label, aiming to boost the local economy and support farmers.

During the state-level Silk Day event, Horticulture Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra unveiled the department's silk product logo and committed to doubling production by 2025. Currently, sericulture is practiced in about 230 villages across Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Pathankot, and Rupnagar districts.

Jouramajra highlighted the challenges faced by silk farmers, most of whom live below the poverty line. To address income disparity, the government plans to establish reeling units in Pathankot and reactivate a silk seed production center in Dalhousie, thus ensuring higher market prices for farmers' produce and reducing production costs.
