A district court in Chandigarh has issued notices to BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut and others following a complaint of allegedly defaming Sikhs in her upcoming movie 'Emergency'.
The court's action came in response to a petition filed by advocate Ravinder Singh Bassi, the president of NGO Lawyers for Humanity, who claims the film misrepresents historical facts and portrays Sikhs in a negative light. The respondents, including Ranaut, have been asked to submit their replies by December 5.
Bassi's petition alleges that the movie 'Emergency' wrongly depicts the former Jathedar of the Akal Takth as a terrorist and makes false claims about the Sikh community's supreme temporal seat. He also accused the film's creators of frequently instigating communal discord through provocative statements. The petitioner has demanded legal action under various sections of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.
