Former BBC news anchor Huw Edwards, once one of Britain's most prominent media figures, received a suspended prison sentence Monday for possessing images of child sexual abuse on his phone.
Edwards, 63, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children in Westminster Magistrates' Court in July. The charges stemmed from photos sent to him on WhatsApp by Alex Williams, who was convicted of distributing child sex abuse images.
Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring sentenced Edwards to a six-month prison term, suspended for two years, and placed him on the sex offenders register for seven years. This has caused significant turmoil for the BBC, which paid Edwards a substantial salary even after his arrest. The BBC expressed its outrage and betrayal in a statement following the sentencing.
