The US government and TikTok will confront each other in federal court on Monday as oral arguments commence in a pivotal legal case that decides the fate of a popular social media platform in America.
Attorneys for both parties will present their cases before a federal appeals court panel in Washington. TikTok and its China-based parent company, ByteDance, are contesting a US law mandating they sever ties or face a US ban by mid-January. This legal dispute is expected to escalate to the US Supreme Court.
The law, signed by President Joe Biden in April, marks the climax of a prolonged debate in Washington concerning TikTok, which the government views as a national security threat due to its Chinese connections.
