Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday commended the renaming of Port Blair as Sri Vijaya Puram, describing it as a step towards overcoming the colonial mindset and honoring India's heritage.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier revealed that Port Blair, the capital city of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, would now be known as Sri Vijaya Puram.

In a recent post on X, Modi stated, ''The name Sri Vijaya Puram pays homage to the profound history and heroic people of the Andaman and Nicobar islands. It also signifies our endeavor to break free from colonial influences and celebrate our heritage,'' he added.

Shah mentioned that this decision emanates from the desire to eliminate colonial remnants, as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands hold a unique place in India's freedom struggle and history.

''Inspired by Prime Minister @narendramodi ji's vision to rid the nation of colonial imprints, today we have renamed Port Blair as 'Sri Vijaya Puram','' Shah stated on X.
