In a move to eradicate colonial imprints, Port Blair, the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, has been renamed Sri Vijaya Puram, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday.

Shah emphasized that the decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision to honor the islands' unparalleled contribution to India's freedom struggle and historical significance.

The rebranding is symbolic, representing the victory achieved in India's quest for independence and the strategic and developmental importance of the islands. Notably, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands were the site of the first unfurling of the Indian flag by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the infamous Cellular Jail where freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar were imprisoned.
