Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh launched the genetically enhanced 'Amrit Catla' fish at the Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (ICAR-CIFA) on Thursday.

Highlighting the ministry's commitment to fisheries research, Singh pledged substantial support for sustainable growth and productivity. The Minister outlined that CIFA has been chosen as a nucleus breeding centre by the ministry, tasked with producing high-quality fish seed for the nation. The National Freshwater Fish Brood Bank will distribute 'Amrit Catla' to farmers across India.

Launched in 2010, the selective breeding programme has resulted in a 15% genetic gain per generation, with the improved Catla reaching an average weight of 1.8 kg in a year, compared to 1.2 kg for local strains. Field trials in several states confirmed this improvement. Singh also introduced the 'Rangeen Machhli' app, a digital platform for the ornamental fisheries sector. The event saw participation from George Kurian, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, alongside senior officials and stakeholders.
