Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was rushed to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan for emergency surgery on his heart and lungs after experiencing chest pains, according to his representatives. Weinstein, 72, had been experiencing severe health issues and was moved from Rikers Island jail late Sunday.

Weinstein underwent a pericardiocentesis procedure, according to his prison consultant Craig Rothfeld. Rothfeld and publicist Juda Engelmayer confirmed that Weinstein had the surgery and is currently in recovery. The procedure came after weeks of worsening health, prompting his lawyer to demand immediate medical attention.

Weinstein, who has a history of various health conditions, had been hospitalized previously for COVID-19 and pneumonia. As he awaits retrial on rape and sexual assault charges, new allegations have surfaced, potentially leading to additional charges. His ongoing legal saga continues, with a retrial set for November and a separate sentence in California awaiting him.
