The Defence Ministry has signed a monumental Rs 26,000-crore contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) for the acquisition of 240 AL-31FP aero-engines to equip the Su-30MKI aircraft.

The engines, to be produced by HAL's Koraput division, are set to bolster the operational abilities of the Indian Air Force's Su-30 fleet while promoting indigenous manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The contract was formalized by high-ranking officials from the Defence Ministry and HAL, witnessed by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari.
