Survival of the Friendliest: Ron Howard's 'Eden' Cast Bonds in Adventure
Ron Howard’s film 'Eeden' tells the Darwinian story of German settlers on a Galapagos island in the 1920s. While the characters face conflict and disappearances, the cast members got along famously during filming in Australia. The movie features Vanessa Kirby and Jude Law in leading roles and depicts themes of survival and nature's unforgiving force.
Ron Howard's new film, 'Eden,' may be rooted in true events, but its actors revealed at the Toronto International Film Festival that they shared a harmonious bond on set, a stark contrast to their onscreen roles.
'Eden' narrates the story of eight idealistic Germans who relocated to a secluded island in the Galapagos archipelago during the late 1920s. They aimed to escape the monotony of Weimar-era Germany and start anew. However, as nature and unscrupulous newcomers challenge their idealism, many mysteriously disappear.
Despite being set in the historic Galapagos Islands, filming took place in Queensland, Australia. Vanessa Kirby, known for 'The Crown' and 'Napoleon,' starred as Dore Strauch, opposite Jude Law's German philosopher Friedrich Ritter. Speaking with Reuters, Kirby described the filming experience as intense, likening it to 'Survivor.' Yet, she emphasized the camaraderie among the cast members, even through the harsh conditions.
Daniel Bruhl, portraying Heinz Wittmer, shared that the cast was deeply committed to the project, driven by Howard's passion. 'He brought an eclectic group together, and it worked brilliantly,' Bruhl said. Unlike the film's storyline, the cast's shared experience was positive and they remain in touch.
