In 2002, Havildar Hokato Hotozhe Sema's ambitions were abruptly halted by a landmine explosion in Jammu and Kashmir's Chowkibal. The blast, which occurred during an anti-terrorist operation, cost him his left leg below the knee and brought immense physical and mental trauma.

However, Sema's journey was far from over. Fast forward twenty-two years, and Sema secured a bronze medal in the men's F57 shot put category at the State de France Paralympics, with a career-best throw of 14.65 meters. This victory swelled India's medal tally to 27 at the event.

Encouraged by senior army officials, Sema took up shot put in 2016. His progression in para-athletics has been nothing short of inspiring, culminating in his impressive performance at the 2022 Paralympics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Sema's achievement, calling it a proud moment for the nation.
