In a significant development, notorious underworld figure Prakash Pandey, known as PP, was initiated into monkhood while serving a life sentence at Almora district jail. The ritual, mediated by Krishna Kandpal, saw seers offering 'diksha' to Pandey, who now bears the name Prakashanand Giri.

The initiation ceremony, held on September 5, included donning a rudraksha garland and sacred beads, along with the chanting of Vedic mantras. According to Kandpal, the seers were moved by Pandey's patriotic fervor, prompting them to guide him towards a more religious and pure life. A larger ceremony is scheduled for the Prayagraj Kumbh in 2025.

Amidst media reports and a press conference held by Kandpal and the seers, the Panch Dashnam Juna Akhara announced a seven-member committee to investigate allegations surrounding the ceremony. Hari Giri, the international convener, emphasized that the spiritual path is open to all, including those with a criminal past. However, the committee will probe if any impropriety occurred during the initiation ritual.
