Takeshi Kitano's 'Broken Rage' Debuts at Venice Film Festival
Japanese director Takeshi Kitano expressed surprise and mild embarrassment as his new film, 'Broken Rage', premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The hour-long movie, commissioned by Amazon, blends comic and gangster elements and includes social media interludes. It stars Kitano alongside Tadanobu Asano and Nao Ômori.
Japanese cult director Takeshi Kitano admitted on Friday that he felt 'a bit embarrassed' by his new film's premiere at the Venice Film Festival, explaining that he never anticipated such a prestigious spotlight for the project.
'Broken Rage', commissioned by TV streamer Amazon, runs just under an hour. Directed, written by, and starring Kitano, it combines gangster violence with slapstick humor, retelling a crime story from both a serious and comedic perspective.
Kitano, sporting purple-tinged hair, revealed that he did not expect the film to appear at such an esteemed festival. 'I should have been more serious about it,' he said through a translator. The film includes social media chats to bridge scenes, drawing laughs in Venice. Despite his renowned status, Kitano expressed enjoyment at participating in international festivals due to Japan's conservative cinematic tastes.
