Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat are likely to enter the political arena, aiming for Congress tickets in the upcoming Haryana Assembly polls. Sources indicate that Julana and Badli seats are being considered for Phogat and Punia, respectively.
The Congress party shared a photograph featuring the duo with former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on its official X handle. AICC General Secretary Deepak Babaria confirmed the possibility of their candidacies, stating that the final decision will emerge by Thursday or Friday.
Punia, a Tokyo Games bronze medallist, and Phogat, who made history as the first woman wrestler to reach an Olympics final, are no strangers to the public eye. Both were vocal in the 2023 protest against sexual harassment allegations leveled at former BJP MP and ex-Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
