President Droupadi Murmu emphasized the indispensable role of the cooperative sector in India's development during an event in Kolhapur, Maharashtra on Monday.

Speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations of the Shri Warna Women Cooperative Group, Murmu noted that while trade and entrepreneurship are key to economic development, the cooperative sector's impact is unparalleled. She highlighted that cooperatives embody the principles of justice, unity, and fraternity outlined in the Constitution. According to Murmu, the sector's strength lies in its ability to unite diverse social groups for collective benefit.

The President cited household names like Amul and Lijjat Papad as successful examples of cooperative ventures. She lauded their contributions to making India the world's largest milk producer and their roles in various other industries, such as fertilizer, cotton, handloom, housing, and sugar. Murmu pointed out the sector's essential role in poverty alleviation and natural resource management. However, she advised that cooperatives must evolve with the times by incorporating technology and professional management practices to overcome challenges like lack of capital and low participation. She encouraged greater youth involvement, particularly in areas like organic farming and eco-tourism. Finally, Murmu called for democratic and transparent operations within cooperatives to ensure their success remains rooted in genuine cooperation.
