The Assam Forest and Environment Ministry is actively identifying the tiger responsible for killing a forest guard at Orang National Park. The animal may be moved to a zoo if needed.
Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary announced in the assembly that the family of the deceased guard, Dhanmoni Deka, has been paid Rs 3 lakh as ex-gratia compensation. Additional humanitarian aid is being considered.
Deka and another guard were attacked around 5.15 pm at the Balipara anti-poaching camp. Despite efforts, Deka's body was recovered only at 9.15 pm. A post-mortem is underway to determine if the tiger consumed any flesh, which will influence relocation decisions. Concerns about the tiger becoming a 'man-eater' were addressed by issuing orders to trace and transfer the tiger to a zoo.
