Netflix has acquired the rights to stream 'Maria', a biographical film directed by Pablo Larrain and featuring Angelina Jolie as the renowned opera singer Maria Callas. The acquisition was announced just before the film's world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 29, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Maria is based on real-life events and chronicles the life of Maria Callas, one of history's most celebrated opera singers. The film delves into her tumultuous and tragic experiences, reimagined during her final days in Paris in the 1970s. Larrain expressed his excitement about collaborating with Netflix once more, describing 'Maria' as his 'most personal work yet' and a creative and psychological portrayal of Callas.

'I'm thrilled to partner again with the Netflix team who care deeply about movies. This film is my most personal work so far. It offers a creative imagining and psychological portrait of Maria Callas, who, after a lifetime of performing for audiences around the globe, finally decides to find her own voice and identity and sing for herself. I am deeply honored to share this story with a worldwide audience, just as Maria did with her life,' he said. The cast includes Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Valeria Golino. The script is penned by Steven Knight, known for 'Spencer' and 'Peaky Blinders.'

The film is produced by Juan de Dios Larrain for Fabula, Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film, and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment, a Fremantle Company. FilmNation Entertainment will manage global sales for 'Maria'. (ANI)
