Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, has accumulated various citizenships that have added to the mystery surrounding his detention in France. Durov, known for his staunch free-speech stance, created Telegram, which has been utilized in protests against repressive regimes like Russia and Iran. However, Western governments have accused Telegram of aiding illegal activities such as drug trafficking and child exploitation.

Durov was freed from custody Wednesday after being arrested at Paris-Le Bourget Airport. He allegedly refused to share information with investigators, which has kept his platform under scrutiny. Despite facing serious allegations, Durov's wealth is estimated at USD 15.5 billion, and he holds citizenship in Russia, France, the UAE, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

His pursuit of multiple citizenships began over a decade ago after disputes with Russian authorities. Durov left VKontakte, Russia's top social media platform, and sought citizenships that offered him travel flexibility. His wealth and connections have kept him influential, with strong ties in Dubai, where his headquarters are based, and in France, where his recent naturalization process remains secretive.
