Two German boys, aged 9 and 12, died following a tragedy in northwestern Denmark, police confirmed on Wednesday.

While on holiday with their family from Munich, the boys were digging a hole in a dune on Sunday when it collapsed, burying them under the sand. Despite rescue efforts by firefighters, police, and locals, they were trapped for 40 minutes before being pulled out.

Both boys were flown in critical condition to Aarhus university hospital, where they passed away. Central and West Jutland Police have deemed the incident a tragic accident and have refrained from further comments.
