Preetam Gaikwad, an electrical engineer, moved to Jena in 2013, drawn by its top-tier university and cutting-edge tech companies. Eleven years later, she expresses concern about the city's political climate.

Jena, located in Thuringia, is set for elections on September 1. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party leads the polls, concerning many including Gaikwad's employer, Jenoptik. Known for its global lens assembly operations, Jenoptik depends on attracting skilled talent, much of it from abroad.

Jenoptik CEO Stefan Traeger noted that the rise of the AfD's anti-foreigner stance is deterring potential employees. Traeger, hopeful for a free and democratic future post-election, stresses that global talent is essential for the company's growth.
