Kerala commemorated the 161st birth anniversary of Mahatma Ayyankali on Wednesday. Ayyankali, who lived from 1863 to 1941, was a seminal figure in the fight against caste-based oppression in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan praised Ayyankali for empowering the oppressed and challenging caste-based restrictions. Highlighting the significant Villuvandi journey and the 'Kallumala' struggle, Vijayan said these acts reshaped Kerala's social fabric.

Other leaders, including Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan and Minister O R Kelu, also paid tribute, emphasizing Ayyankali's enduring influence on social justice movements in Kerala.
