The Venice International Film Festival, the world's oldest film festival, is set to open its 81st edition on Wednesday. The festival kicks off with the U.S. comedy horror 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice', directed by Tim Burton, and runs until September 7, concluding with Pupi Avati's Italian film, 'The American Backyard'.
Held on the Venice Lido, a barrier island in the Venetian Lagoon, the festival is accessible by boat from the main city of Venice. This prime location makes it a significant event, often considered a predictor for the Oscars. Eight of the past 12 best director Oscar winners debuted their films at Venice.
This year's festival promises a glittering lineup of stars, including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Lady Gaga, among others. The official selection includes 21 films vying for the Golden Lion award, with the main competition jury headed by France's Isabelle Huppert. Additionally, a selection of films is being showcased out of competition, along with a preview of upcoming TV series.
