A statue of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, unveiled eight months ago by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a fort in Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra, collapsed on Monday, causing significant embarrassment for the state government.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde attributed the collapse to 'strong winds' and vowed to rebuild the statue. The 45km per hour winds were said to have caused the fall, despite the statue being designed and constructed by the Indian Navy.
The incident has drawn harsh criticism from opposition parties. NCP state president Jayant Patil accused the government of negligence, and Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray claimed the statue was completed hastily ahead of elections. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the collapse.
