In a dramatic turn of events, star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been named as an accused in connection with a murder that occurred during the recent protests and violence in Bangladesh. The turmoil has left hundreds dead and has upended the nation's political and sporting arenas.
The 37-year-old former Bangladesh captain and ex-lawmaker from the Awami League is among 147 individuals facing charges in the murder of Rubel Islam, who was killed amid protests in early August, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. The case was filed at Dhaka's Adabor police station.
Though Shakib was not in Bangladesh at the time, his name appears in the first information report. The protests led to the resignation and flight of PM Sheikh Hasina, with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus stepping in as chief adviser. Significant changes have followed, including the resignation of Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hasan Papon and the appointment of ex-captain Faruque Ahmed.
