Indian students, charities, and diaspora organisations in Britain have mobilised to demand justice following the rape-murder of an on-duty female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
Women's organisations organised peace vigils at Parliament Square in London and several other UK cities, while the Students' Federation of India – United Kingdom (SFI-UK) held a march in Liverpool. Participants lit candles spelling out 'Justice' and held placards calling for respect and empowerment of women.
"We have received overwhelming global support, proving it's time to wake up, take notice, and join hands for this cause," said Dr Dipti Jain of the Medicos Women Charity. The protests, held across England, Scotland, and Wales, also involved global units in the US, Canada, and Australia.
Earlier, SFI-UK organised a march in Liverpool. "From Kolkata to Liverpool, we will stand for justice and women's safety," said Raunak Bhattacharjee, SFI-UK activist. "It's about the safety of all students and institutional accountability," added Renya Ramakrishnan, an SFI-UK committee member.
The protests resonate widely after a junior doctor was raped and murdered in Kolkata on August 9. A CBI inquiry is ongoing amid concerns for women's safety.
