The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has levied a Rs 25,000 fine on the district magistrate of Kanpur Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, for failing to adhere to tribunal directives regarding a report on individuals exposed to toxic metals, including chromium.

The NGT was addressing the issue of chromium discharge and untreated industrial effluents by tanneries. The improper operation of a common effluent treatment plant at Jajmau village and chromium disposal across Kanpur Dehat and Kanpur Nagar districts were also under scrutiny.

On August 14, NGT Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava stated that the DMs of Kanpur Nagar and Kanpur Dehat were previously instructed to report the condition of those affected by toxic metal exposure and their access to health facilities. The Kanpur Nagar DM failed to appear virtually to discuss the submitted report, prompting the tribunal to impose the fine.
