In a heartwarming turn of events, Shahjahan, a man from Tripura's Sepahijala district, has returned home after spending 37 years imprisoned in Bangladesh. Shahjahan crossed back into India through the Srimantapur land customs station, aided by Border Security Force personnel.
The harrowing ordeal began in 1988 when Shahjahan, who was visiting his in-law's house in Comilla, Bangladesh, was arrested for illegal entry. Although sentenced to 11 years, he spent an additional 26 years behind bars before his release was finally secured.
The unjust imprisonment gained media attention recently, engaging the Zara Foundation, which works to help immigrants trapped abroad. Following extensive legal efforts, Shahjahan was handed over to Indian authorities. Overjoyed to reunite with his family, he expressed immense gratitude to the Zara Foundation for bringing him back.
