Several former students of state-run R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday joined the ongoing protests demanding justice for a woman doctor who was tragically raped and murdered on the hospital's premises on August 9.

Veteran doctors, alongside their younger counterparts, staged a sit-in protest, holding placards and demanding swift justice. "I belong to the 1964 batch. What has happened in the hospital is just unthinkable. It is imperative to hit the streets and protest," said a veteran lady doctor.

Healthcare services were disrupted in state-run hospitals across West Bengal as junior doctors continued their cease-work protest. The body of the woman postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered in a seminar hall, and a civic volunteer was arrested the following day for alleged involvement in the crime. The junior doctors are pressing for a speedy trial and the release of the post-mortem report.

The Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which began the probe on August 14.
