The long-awaited Athikadavu Avinashi project, designed to provide water for both agriculture and drinking purposes in Tamil Nadu, has finally come to fruition. Spanning an impressive six-decade history and costing Rs 1,916.41 crore, the project was officially commissioned by Chief Minister M K Stalin from the Secretariat.

The ambitious project aims to recharge groundwater and fill water bodies across Coimbatore, Tiruppur, and Erode districts. Originally conceived in 1957 and later named the Athikadavu Avinashi Ground Water Recharge and Drinking Water Supply Scheme in 1972, it saw various political interventions and was finally expedited and completed under the current administration.

By diverting approximately 1.5 TMC of surplus water from the Bhavani River, the project is set to irrigate 24,468 acres and fill 1,045 water bodies. The journey of this project saw contributions from several leaders and parties, finally culminating in a significant benefit to the farmers and residents of Tamil Nadu's three key districts.
