Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Salseng C Marak passed away on Friday at the age of 82, according to his family members. Marak, a veteran Congress leader, succumbed to old age-related ailments while undergoing treatment at Tura Civil Hospital.
Marak was notable for being the first chief minister of the state to complete a full five-year term in 1993. He briefly held the office for 12 days in 1998 when the Congress-led coalition collapsed. Additionally, he served as the state Congress chief in 2003.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed his condolences, emphasizing Marak's contributions to the state's development. AICC chief Mallikarjun Kharge also mourned Marak's passing, praising his commitment to Meghalaya's growth. A three-day state mourning has been declared in his honor.
