The Congress on Thursday strongly objected to Jawaharlal Nehru's omission from the list of iconic independence movement personalities in President Droupadi Murmu's address. They accused the government of attempting to erase India's first prime minister from history.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh reminded that Nehru's 'tryst with destiny' speech was delivered around midnight on August 14, 1947. He recalled Nehru's self-description as the 'first servant of the Indian people' and emphasized the importance of his lesser-known speeches and messages from that period.
Ramesh lamented that despite the mention of several great leaders in the President's address, Nehru, who spent ten years in British jails, was excluded. He labeled it as part of a continuous campaign to eliminate Nehru from Indian history.
