Zhan Beleniuk: Wrestling Through Adversity
Zhan Beleniuk, a Ukrainian Olympic wrestler and member of parliament, faces immense challenges as he trains amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. Despite the adversities, he remains focused on competing and representing Ukraine internationally. Beleniuk balances his sporting career with his governmental responsibilities, aiming to showcase Ukraine's resilience.
Zhan Beleniuk's focus has wavered at times as he trained for a second Olympic gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling. But his commitment to both his sport and his country keep him determined.
The Ukrainian athlete is more than just a wrestler; he's a member of parliament. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022 has made training challenging. "It's difficult because you are thinking about your safety, the safety of your relatives, your friends," Beleniuk said. Training under the threat of missile attacks, his team has spent more time training outside Ukraine in places like Croatia and Poland.
Despite these hurdles, Beleniuk, the first Black member of Ukraine's parliament, remains focused on his upcoming competition. "Our athletes should show that Ukraine is still alive," he said. Beleniuk has previously won gold in Tokyo 2021 and silver in Rio 2016. He will compete in the 87-kilogram category at Champ-de-Mars Arena against China's Qian Haitao and other world champions. His experience gives him confidence.
Beleniuk, whose father died in the Rwandan genocide, maintains a connection with Africa and meets with international leaders to garner support against Russian propaganda. "Our country gave me everything that I have now, so my responsibility in this tough period is to share this information and connect with different MPs around the world," he said. He doesn't have to worry about Russian wrestlers, as they have refused to compete in the Olympics as neutrals. As his country continues to resist Russian aggression, Beleniuk stays resolute: "We don't have any other choice, because if we stop, they kill all of us,'' he said.
