Gunmen stormed a helicopter in Indonesia's restive Papua region, killing a New Zealand pilot shortly after landing, while releasing two health workers and two children. The incident highlights the ongoing conflict between the West Papua Liberation Army and Indonesian authorities.
The pilot, Glen Malcolm Conning, working for PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, was killed in Alama village, Central Papua. Authorities believe the attackers were from the armed wing of the Free Papua Movement. Local passengers were released, and the plane was set ablaze.
West Papua Liberation Army spokesperson Sebby Sambom stated the area is a restricted zone for civilians, aiming to halt development until government negotiations. New Zealand's embassy in Jakarta is seeking further details. Recent years have seen a surge in violence in Papua, affecting civilians and security forces alike.
