Turkiye Blocks Instagram in Latest Social Media Clampdown
The Information and Communication Technologies Authority in Turkiye blocked access to Instagram, citing the platform's removal of posts expressing condolences for Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. The action has sparked controversy, with critics labeling it as censorship. The block may be lifted when Instagram complies with local laws and sensitivities.
Turkiye's communications authority has blocked access to Instagram, marking another instance of the country's stringent control over internet platforms. The Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA) disclosed the decision on Friday, without specifying a reason.
According to Yeni Safak newspaper, the move followed Instagram's removal of posts by Turkish users expressing condolences for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. Fahrettin Altun, the presidential communications director, criticized Instagram for censoring these messages.
Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu asserted that the platform breached serious crime regulations. He indicated that the ban would be lifted if Instagram complies with local norms and laws. Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu condemned the block as censorship, noting the essential role of social media in modern communication and commerce.
