Indian cricket is in mourning as the sport remembers the contributions of Anshuman Gaekwad, who passed away on Saturday night after a prolonged battle with blood cancer. Gaekwad, who wore the Indian jersey in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs, was celebrated posthumously as a gentleman by peers and influential figures in the cricket community.
Gautam Gambhir, who is currently with the Indian team in Sri Lanka, expressed his grief on social media, 'Saddened by news of the demise of Anshuman Gaekwad ji. May God give strength to his family & loved ones,' he posted. Harbhajan Singh, who debuted under Gaekwad's coaching in 1998, also shared his heartfelt condolences, 'Indian cricket will be poorer in his absence. Rest in Peace. Condolences to family.'
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute by recognizing Gaekwad's immense contribution to Indian cricket, 'Shri Anshuman Gaekwad Ji will be remembered for his contribution to cricket. He was a gifted player and an outstanding coach. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti,' Modi stated via his official social media account.
