Odisha is on the verge of introducing the world's first melanistic tiger safari near the Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj district by year's end, according to a top forest official.
The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has granted 'in-principle' approval, and the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has endorsed the state government's proposal, confirmed Susanta Nanda, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests. Melanistic tigers from Bhubaneswar's Nandan Kanan Zoo will be relocated to the 200-hectare safari site adjoining NH-18. The spacious enclosure will feature a 100-hectare display area, veterinary facilities, a rescue center, and amenities for staff and visitors.
Known for hosting the world's only wild melanistic tigers, Similipal Tiger Reserve serves as a vital wildlife corridor between Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The initiative seeks to enhance Odisha's wildlife tourism and provide conservationists, scientists, and enthusiasts a unique opportunity to observe this rare tiger variant.
