The Unforgettable Sacrifice: Brig Khushal Singh Thakur Remembers the Heroism of Kargil

Brigadier Khushal Singh Thakur (retired) recalls the harrowing moments of the Kargil War, especially the death of his second-in-command, Lt Col R Vishwanathan. In a poignant recollection, Brigadier Khushal Singh Thakur (retired) vividly recalls the Kargil War and the heart-wrenching moment his second-in-command, Lt Col R Vishwanathan, died in his lap. Thakur's regiment, alongside the 2 Rajputana Rifles, captured the crucial Tololing peak, marking a significant turning point in the 1999 conflict.

'It was agonizing. He was not required to go to the front, but since I decided to go, he insisted on accompanying me,' Thakur recalled, highlighting Vishwanathan's sense of duty.

The operation began on May 22 under severe conditions, with 34 soldiers lost over two months. Despite the challenges, including heavy enemy fire and a lack of proper equipment, the soldiers' morale remained intact. The Kargil War was declared over on July 26, 1999, after India successfully reclaimed the occupied heights in Ladakh.
