Kannada Theatre Stalwart Sadananda Suvarna Passes Away at 92

Veteran Kannada theatre and film personality, Sadananda Suvarna, passed away at the age of 92 due to age-related illness. Suvarna was renowned for his contributions to Kannada and Tulu theatre, and his work in cinema and television. The Karnataka Government recently honored him with the B V Karanta Award.

Veteran Kannada theatre and film personality Sadananda Suvarna passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92 due to age-related illness, family sources said.

Suvarna, known for writing and directing numerous successful Kannada Tulu plays, also produced acclaimed movies such as 'Ghatashraddha', 'Kubi', and 'Iyala' along with the TV serial 'Gudde Bhuta'.

He had a significant presence in Mumbai theatre as an actor, dramatist, and experimental director, having joined Mangaluru theatre at a young age and leaving a lasting impact there.

Among his directed plays were 'Urulu', 'Court Martial', and 'Maley nintha mele'. Known as a theatre visionary, Suvarna nurtured many artists who subsequently enriched Karnataka's theatre and cinema landscape.

His contributions to amateur theatre in Mumbai and Mangalore were particularly notable. The Karnataka Government recently awarded him the prestigious B V Karanta Award. Additionally, D Seethalakshmi Karkikodi earned a doctorate for her research on Suvarna's work, titled 'Ranga Jangaman Sadananda Suvarna'.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his condolences, noting the significant loss to the stage and film community. Suvarna's award-winning film 'Ghatashraddha' and the creative talents he mentored continue to thrive in the arts.

'I also share in the grief of Sadananda Suvarna's disciples and fans who have lost him,' he added.
