An expert panel has called for constructing a memorial in Goa to honor temples demolished during Portuguese rule, alongside a museum to display the state's ancient temple heritage. This recommendation was part of a report tabled in the legislative assembly.
The committee asserts that over 1,000 temples were destroyed by Portuguese rulers in the state. Goa Archaeology Minister Subhash Phal Desai informed the House on Monday that his department is currently identifying a suitable site for the memorial.
Desai presented the expert committee's report on temple reconstruction, also noting plans to translate historical books into English for facilitating further research. Formed in 2023, the committee has suggested that a temple memorial (smarak devalaya) be built in the areas most affected by temple destruction.
