The Kailash peak in Tibet will be visible to devotees from the 18,300-feet high old Lipulekh pass within Indian territory starting September 15. Situated in the Vyas valley of Pithoragarh district, the pass will allow common pilgrims a closer view of the sacred site, according to Pithoragarh District Tourism Officer Kirti Chandra Arya.

From September 15, pilgrims can travel by vehicle up to Lipulekh from Dharchula, and then traverse 800 meters on foot to reach the viewing point. The Kailash-Mansarovar yatra through Lipulekh pass was closed in 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and remains unopened by China. However, pilgrims can now view both the Kailash peak and Om Parvat from within Indian territory without any difficulties in a single trip, Arya noted.

The Uttarakhand Tourism Department received the Central Government's approval to open the old Lipulekh pass for common tourist activities. Currently, the department is preparing the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for these activities, stated Pithoragarh District Magistrate Reena Joshi.
