Lyon Daniels Discusses 'Spiderwick Chronicles' Update for Modern Youth

The latest adaptation of "The Spiderwick Chronicles," now streaming on the Roku Channel, marks a generational update to the beloved fantasy series. Centered in the mystical town of Henson, Michigan, the series brings to life a world where mystical creatures mingle unseen alongside humans. Lyon Daniels stars as Jared, a 15-year-old who, along with his family, uncovers the hidden universe of the Spiderwick Estate.

Lyon Daniels, at the young age of 16, expressed his enthusiasm for leading the series during its premiere. "I'm such a big fantasy geek. I love Dungeons & Dragons and Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I always felt like this is a Harry Potter world to me. It's so special," Daniels told reporters at the event held at the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, Mass., emphasizing his deep connection to the genre.

The series, adapted by Aron Eli Coleite, follows the Grace family as they move into the dilapidated ancestral home of Helen Grace, played by Joy Bryant. As the family, including Jared's twin brother Simon (Noah Cottrell) and sister Mallory (Mychala Lee), settle in, they discover that their new home is not just an ordinary mansion but a portal to an unseen world teeming with fairies, goblins, and other magical beings.

"This version of 'The Spiderwick Chronicles' is definitely adjusted for this generation," Lyon stated. "We touch on very deep topics, especially mental health, which is a very important topic today that many teenagers my age go through and is very personal to me."

Christian Slater, playing Dr. Brauer, a psychiatrist with secrets, adds a layer of complexity to the narrative. Slater's character shifts unpredictably between a menacing antagonist and a misguided ally, bringing a dynamic presence to the series. His performance has been highlighted as one of the standout elements in an otherwise uneven series plagued by some repetitive storytelling and character development issues.

"To be a beacon for that—for teens who think that they are alone and have nobody to talk to—is amazing and beautiful," Lyon continued, reflecting on the importance of representing real-world issues through the lens of fantasy.

The setting of the Spiderwick Estate itself plays a critical role in the series, described as a character on its own. "The minute they open the door—you see the dragon locks. You get the sense this really is a special house," said Holly Black, one of the original authors of the books. The estate, packed with "cool, creepy" elements as described by Lyon, helped the actors immerse themselves into their roles, enhancing the authenticity of their performances.

The series not only aims to entertain but also to offer coping tools for young viewers dealing with their realities. "Sometimes, the fantasy world is a way of giving coping tools to, maybe, think about or process some of the stuff going on in the real world," DiTerlizzi explained.

As the story reveals, viewers can expect to see Jared evolve from a misunderstood teenager into a more confident and heroic figure. "You'll kind of see him progress throughout the story and evolve. Even though he goes through trials and tribulations, you'll kind of see him take on this hero role, which he didn't think he could, but it happens," Daniels shared.Watch the Spiderwick Chronicles trailer below.
