Acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro, riding high on his Academy Award win for "Pinocchio," is now turning his visionary gaze to a new project: a fresh adaptation of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein." This project is part of del Toro's broader collaboration with Netflix, a partnership formed in August 2020 that grants him the creative liberty to write, produce, and direct his own projects.
Del Toro, a filmmaker with a deep-seated fascination for the monstrous and the macabre, has long expressed his admiration for Shelley's work. His affinity for iconic monsters like Godzilla, the Xenomorph from "Alien," and the creature in John Carpenter's "The Thing" has been well-documented. Now, he plans to reimagine "Frankenstein," a novel he considers the most significant in his life.
While specifics about the film's release are still under wraps, it is expected that the production will commence in early 2024, indicating a possible release towards the end of 2025. Given del Toro's esteemed status in the film industry and his previous work with Netflix, it's likely that "Frankenstein" will follow the pattern of having both a theatrical release and a streaming debut on Netflix.
The film's casting has evolved over time. Initially, it was announced that Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Andrew Garfield would play key roles, with Goth portraying Doctor Frankenstein's love interest. However, due to scheduling conflicts and the impact of the WGA writer’s strike and the SAG-AFTRA actor’s strike, which caused numerous production delays and reshuffling in the industry, there have been significant changes. Andrew Garfield had to drop out, paving the way for Jacob Elordi to take on the role of the Monster. Oscar Isaac remains set to play the titular Doctor Frankenstein.
Adding to the film's allure is the inclusion of Christoph Waltz, a two-time Academy Award winner known for his roles in Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds" and "Django Unchained," as well as his portrayal of Blofeld in the James Bond films "Spectre" and "No Time to Die." Waltz's connection with del Toro goes back to "Pinocchio," where he voiced Count Volpe.
The cast is further bolstered by Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, and Christian Convery, each bringing their unique talents to this ambitious project. Del Toro's choice of actors reflects his intent to create a diverse and dynamic interpretation of the classic story.
Del Toro’s "Frankenstein" is shaping up to be a significant addition to his filmography, one that promises to blend his distinctive style with the timeless themes of Shelley's novel. Fans of del Toro and Gothic horror alike are eagerly awaiting more details about this intriguing project, which stands as a testament to the director's enduring passion for storytelling and his ability to reinvent classic tales for modern audiences.
