The Conjuring 4 updates: Everything we know so far

The Conjuring 4, the highly anticipated sequel to the supernatural horror movie franchise is happening! Fans of the series are both excited and curious about what this installment will bring, particularly because it may mark the final on-screen case for Vera Farmiga, who plays Lorraine Warren, and Patrick Wilson, who portrays Ed Warren.

In a previous interview with Collider, James Wan, the producer and director of the first Conjuring movie, hinted at the possibility of further films, stating, "We never know. You never know. We'll see." This statement left room for speculation regarding the future of the franchise.

During Warner Brothers' presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas a few months ago, the official title of The Conjuring 4 was revealed. The upcoming movie, which will be part of the record-breaking horror franchise, is titled The Conjuring: Last Rites. Audiences can expect to see the return of Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, reprising their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The announcement for the fourth movie in the central storyline of the Conjuring universe was made around the spooky season last year. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who previously worked on The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, has been attached to pen the script for this new installment.

While the director for The Conjuring: Last Rites has not yet been announced, there is speculation that James Wan may return to helm the sequel. In a recent interview with Collider about his robot horror feature M3GAN, Wan shared that they were taking their time with The Conjuring 4 to ensure they tell "the right story" that honors the emotion of the Warrens' tales and potentially wraps up the series.

"Yeah, we are working on it right now. With the Conjuring films, we are very precious about [them]. And so we kind of want to just take our time to make sure we get it right and to make sure the emotion of the Warren stories that we want to tell, and moving into, and potentially wrapping up, we just want to make sure that it's the right thing, the right story that we're telling."

The Conjuring franchise began in 2013 with the release of the eponymous film directed by James Wan. Inspired by the real-life reports of Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators and authors associated with prominent haunting cases, the movie introduced audiences to the Warrens and their involvement with the Perron family's haunting in Rhode Island in 1971. The success of The Conjuring led to the creation of The Conjuring Universe franchise, including spin-offs and sequels.

As for the release date of The Conjuring 4, Warner Bros. has yet to make an official announcement. However, based on the three-year gaps between each movie, fans can expect the premiere to take place in early summer 2024.
