Fans of the hit K-drama, Kingdom, have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of Season 3. Since its initial release in 2019, the series has gained a massive following worldwide. The show follows the harrowing journey of Crown Prince Lee Chang as he battles against his scheming Queen stepmother and fights for survival against hordes of fast-moving zombies.
Set in the 16th century, three years after the Imjin War, Kingdom takes place in a fictionalized version of medieval Joseon, which is modern-day Korea. Seamlessly blending elements of political thriller and zombie horror, the story revolves around Lee Chang's efforts to uncover the truth behind a mysterious illness afflicting the King. However, he finds himself entangled in a deadly epidemic that threatens to consume the entire Kingdom of Joseon. In his quest to save his people from the plague, Lee Chang must also navigate the treacherous waters of politics to prevent his rivals from seizing the throne.
Kingdom Season 1 focused on the outbreak of the zombie virus and explored the behavior of these undead creatures. Kingdom Season 2 delved deeper into the tactics and strategies employed to combat the zombie threat. The franchise expanded with the release of the special episode titled "Kingdom: Ashin of the North" in 2021. This episode introduced audiences to the character of Ashin, who played a crucial role in unleashing the zombie outbreak.
While fans eagerly await the continuation of the zombie series in Season 3, Netflix has yet to officially announce a release date or confirm the show's renewal. However, Kim Eun-hee, the writer of Kingdom, expressed his passion for the series in an interview with THR. He mentioned that he loves writing for the highly energetic show and believes there is still so much more story to tell. Eun-hee also praised the chemistry among the cast members, fueling hope for the future of the series. He even expressed his desire to see the show develop up to Season 10, indicating his commitment to the project.
The special episode, "Kingdom: Ashin of the North," serves as a vital bridge between the events of the first two seasons and the upcoming Season 3. According to Eun-hee, the episode was conceived to provide additional depth and context to the story.
"I decided to go with a special episode because I thought it would be more interesting. We cannot leave out the story of the resurrection plant." She further added that "If the first season served as the cornerstone of the show, Kingdom: Ashin of the North, will be a stepping stone for the third season of Kingdom.
Despite Netflix's silence regarding the future of the South Korean drama, there remains hope that Kingdom Season 3 will eventually see the light of day. With its gripping storyline, compelling characters, and dedicated fan base, the series has left viewers eagerly awaiting its return. As fans continue to show interest and support for the show, the possibility of more seasons and further exploration of the Kingdom's dark and treacherous world remains a tantalizing prospect.
