House of the Dragon Season 2 was confirmed just five days after the premiere of Season 1 on HBO. Pre-production began on April 11, 2023, at Warner Bros. Studios in Watford, England, and later moved to Cáceres, Spain, on May 18, 2023.
Francesca Orsi, HBO's Executive Vice President of Drama Series, recently reaffirmed that the spinoff will return in 2024, despite the ongoing writers' strike. Production is progressing as planned, with a talented cast and scripts that are bringing the story to life.
Orsi said “We have a beautiful cast that was assembled by Kate Rhodes [James], and we just are proud of seeing how those scripts are coming alive. The emotionality that the cast is bringing to it is something that we feel confident with and know that we’re going to deliver something special.”
While the plot for Season 2 remains a secret, showrunner Ryan Condal mentioned that new characters will be introduced, and fans can expect to see their favorite characters conspiring, battling, and riding dragons. Excitingly, Season 2 will feature five new dragons, as revealed by Condal.
In addition, intriguing set photos and videos have surfaced, providing glimpses into the Game of Thrones prequel and expected spoilers about the upcoming storyline.

The funeral procession for Prince Jaehaerys, following his death in the aftermath of Blood and Cheese, will be a major storyline in House of the Dragon Season 2. Alicent Hightower and Helaena prominently feature in the procession, with the body of a small child leading it.
The nickname "Rhaenyra the Cruel" is used by the greens faction to turn the people of King's Landing against Rhaenyra. This is propaganda, as Rhaenyra is not directly involved in the plot of Blood and Cheese.
King Aegon II Targaryen adopts a new sigil and banner representing the greens, distinct from Rhaenyra's faction. The banner features a green and a gold dragon symbolizing his dragon, Sunfyre.
The presence of certain cast members, including Elinda Massey (Rhaenyra's lady-in-waiting) and Eddie Eyre (likely in a minor role), raises questions about their involvement and potential changes to their characters.
Set photos to confirm the death of Meleys, Princess Rhaenys' dragon, during the Battle at Rook's Rest. Meleys' severed head is paraded through the streets of King's Landing, proclaimed as the "traitor dragon."
Princess Rhaenys is also likely to die in the same battle, as depicted in Fire & Blood. This would be a significant blow to Rhaenyra's cause.
The deaths of Prince Jaehaerys and Meleys are used as propaganda by the Greens to sway public opinion against Rhaenyra. The reaction of the smallfolk to these events appears mixed, with some throwing food during the funeral procession and potential booing at Meleys' head.
The presence of Emma D'Arcy (Rhaenyra) in Spain raises questions about the timeline and potential storyline deviations. It's unclear if she will claim King's Landing earlier than expected or if her presence indicates flashback or dream sequences.
These set photos and revelations offer a glimpse into the intense and complex events to come in House of the Dragon Season 2, building on the shocking developments of Season 1 and setting the stage for the full-fledged Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.
