Netflix’s hit show Sweet Tooth has been renewed for a third and final season. The streamer has already filmed the eight-episode season in New Zealand, and fans can expect the show to air in 2024. The showrunner, Jim Mickle, has said that Season 3 will provide a satisfying conclusion to the epic tale of Gus’ journey.
“In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life. In the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going,” said creator, showrunner and executive producer Jim Mickle.
The show’s setting isn’t the only change in Sweet Tooth Season 3. The cast will expand to include two new series regulars, Cara Gee and Ayazhan Dalabayeva. In addition, fans can expect to see more of Rosalind Chao’s Zhang and Amy Seimetz’s Birdie, as both have been upgraded to series regulars. Sweet Tooth’s executive producers, Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell, have expressed their excitement about the final chapter of the show, stating that the tension will be higher than ever before.
“The ticking clock of, ‘Can they achieve their goal before it’s too late?’ is ratcheted up,” Downey tells Tudum. Burrell adds, “It just keeps amping up. It feels like a culmination emotionally and you get to see all of these characters together and their philosophies really at odds. Tension is high.”
The show has been a massive success for Netflix, with Season 2 quickly earning 48.3 million hours viewed during its first four days of release following its April 27 debut. The show follows the journey of Gus and Jepperd as they make their way to Colorado from an isolated home in Yellowstone. In Season 3, fans can expect another road trip story but in a very different way, with a darker tone as Gus starts to mature and the themes become darker.
The show’s creator, Jim Mickle, expressed his gratitude for the cast and crew who brought the characters to life, saying that they gave the characters depth and point of view, making them come alive on screen. He said, “In Season 3, everybody is dealing with some kind of wound or emotional loss, whether that was somebody in their life or a part of themselves. Everybody is looking inward and looking to move on and ultimately learning that life doesn’t stop. You have to keep putting one foot in front of another.”
Sweet Tooth fans can look forward to an exciting and satisfying conclusion to the show with Season 3. The show’s Arctic setting and expanded cast promise to take viewers on an unforgettable journey, with higher stakes and tension than ever before. The show has been a massive hit for Netflix, and fans are eagerly awaiting the premiere of the final season in 2024.
