House of the Dragon, the hit HBO series, is expected to wrap filming for its upcoming Season 2 much faster than Season 1. Following the premiere of Season 1 in November 2021, the confirmation of Season 2 was made just five days later, and pre-production began in August 2022. The filming of Season 2 began on April 11, 2023, at Warner Bros. Studios in Watford, England, before moving to Cáceres, Spain.
According to Redanian Intelligence, the series is expected to wrap filming between September and October 2023, taking only 5 or 6 months, which is half the time it took to film Season 1. "We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera," House of the Dragon co-creator, showrunner, and executive producer Ryan Condal said in a statement on April 11.
He continued, “All your favorite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies, and riding their dragons into battle. We can't wait to share what we have in store.”
While HBO has yet to announce a release date for House of the Dragon Season 2, based on the timeline of Season 1, it's possible that the new season could premiere in the summer of 2024. The production for Season 1 took 16 months from the start of filming to the show's premiere, and reports suggest that Season 2 is on track for a similar timeline. In March 2023, Deadline reported that Season 2 was expected to have a "likely summer 2024 premiere."
HBO's Chief Content Officer, Casey Bloys, has also commented on the release date of Season 2. In an interview with Vulture in October 2022, Bloys indicated that he expected the new season to be ready "sometime in '24," but cautioned that there were still many unknown factors in the production process.
"Don't expect it in '23, but I think sometime in '24," he said. "We're just starting to put the plan together, and just like last time, there are so many unknowns. It's not to be coy or secretive, but you don't want to say it's going to be ready on this date, and then you have to move it."
The show follows the Targaryen family's history, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The upcoming season is expected to continue to explore the intricate relationships and power struggles within the Targaryen family. Writer George R. R. Martin has stated that the show will need four seasons to fully cover the Targaryen civil war, the Dance of the Dragons. He believes that each season should have 10 episodes, as 13 episodes would be too slow. Martin has expressed excitement that there will be 10 hours of storytelling per season and that it will take four seasons to do justice to the full story of the Dance of the Dragons.
"As it is, I am thrilled that we still have 10 hours every season to tell our tales, it is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish."
All episodes of House of the Dragon are available to stream on HBO Max. The exact release date for House of the Dragon is not yet decided. We will keep updating you on House of the Dragon Season 2 as soon as we get anything new. Keep an eye on Devdiscourse for more news on fantasy series.
