Despite having garnered significant success through two seasons, the drama series Sex/Life, which was brought to fruition by Stacy Rukeyser, has unfortunately been canceled by the popular streaming platform Netflix. This decision has left the show's enthusiastic followers pondering why this sudden conclusion was drawn.
Notably, as the storyline advanced, the intricacies of Billie's romantic life became increasingly steamy and intricate, culminating in a season 1 finale that kept audiences wanting more. However, despite the anticipation for a third season, Netflix has opted to end the series after season 2.
Upon its release, Sex/Life season 2 quickly rose to prominence on Netflix, breaking into the platform's Top 10 within the first few days. Between March 2 and March 26, the season amassed a total of 126.8 million hours of viewing time worldwide. Although it eventually dropped out of the top 10 English-language series on the platform, the show's early success demonstrated its significant popularity among Netflix's global audience.
Sex/Life takes inspiration from the book ''44 Chapters About 4 Men'' written by BB Easton. The show's creator, Stacy Rukeyser, fulfilled multiple roles on the series, serving as showrunner, executive producer, and writer.
On April 7, 2023, Deadline was the first to report that the series had been canceled. A spokesperson from Netflix conveyed to the news outlet that, in their estimation, the second season provided a fitting and organic conclusion to the show's key characters, whose relationships were resolved adequately.
“The second season brought the series to a natural close, wrapping up the storylines for key characters whose relationships come to a happy conclusion, adding the streamer is proud of the show and the work put into it by producers, cast, and crew.”
The announcement of the cancellation followed after Sarah Shahi, who played a lead role in Sex/Life, confirmed her participation in ABC's new series, Judgement. On the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Shahi acknowledged that her experience with the show had changed in season 2
“It became a much different thing for me, and I’m not afraid to say that,” she said. “I struggled with the material… I mean, I’m never going to work for Netflix again now after saying all this. I just can’t lie,” said Sarah Shahi
Stacy Rukeyser, the showrunner of Sex/Life, revealed in an interview with THR that the season 2 finale was not meant to serve as the series finale.
Stacy Rukeyser said, “The episode was never intended to be a series finale, that’s for sure. I know there are always more stories to tell with these characters in the Sex/Life universe, and I hope we get the chance to tell those stories. It was important that we get to a meaningful place with each character this season.”
In the final episode of Sex/Life season 2, Billie witnesses Devon and Cooper's car crash, and Cooper is taken into police custody. Billie takes Cooper home where he meets Majid, and they discuss their failed relationship. Meanwhile, Hudson, Majid's son, runs away during a night out with Billie and Cooper but is eventually found with their help. Sasha decides to stay with Kam, and Cooper reunites with Emily. Billie and Majid break up, and she focuses on getting her Ph.D. and co-parenting with Cooper. Eventually, Brad confesses his love for Billie, and they get married on the beach, with Billie revealing that she's pregnant at the altar.
Sex/Life's second season finale left several open-ended questions that could be explored in a potential third season. The show could delve into Billie and Brad's marriage, their struggles, and how they cope with the challenges of raising four children. Additionally, the pregnancy storyline could be developed, showing how it affects their relationship. While a third season could provide new and interesting directions for the show, the season 2 finale could also serve as a satisfying conclusion.
