Lockwood & Co. premiered on January 27th, 2023, and has already garnered a lot of attention from fans who are eagerly awaiting the announcement of a second season. This detective thriller series, directed by Joe Cornish and based on Jonathan Stroud's book series, consists of eight episodes that draw from the first two books, 'The Screaming Staircase' and 'The Whispering Skull.'

Despite its initial success, there has been no word about the renewal of the series since its release over two months ago. The show's performance has not been as strong as other titles in its genre, and there was a significant drop in viewership from weeks 2 to 3, leading some to speculate that it may not return for a second season.

While there is no official statement yet, industry experts predict that if Lockwood & Co. is renewed, it will likely only receive a second and final season. Netflix has struggled to renew shows that target younger audiences in recent years, with titles like First Kill, Resident Evil, The Imperfects, The Midnight Club, The Bastard Son, The Devil Himself, and Warrior Nun all failing to make it beyond their first or second seasons.

In a recent interview with Collider, Showrunner Joe Cornish was asked about the chances of a second season for Lockwood & Co. and whether social engagement would be a contributing factor towards its renewal.

He said, “… I’m not going to get caught up in the whole, “Is there/isn’t there going to be a Season 2?” We drive ourselves crazy. We just have to be super proud of what we’ve done. We really appreciate the fact, particularly, that fans of the book are recognizing the world that was in their imagination up on the screen. I just want to be proud and happy for the actors, for all the incredible technicians, everybody who worked on the show that made it good, and that so many people dig it.”

In a recent interview with Empire, Joe Cornish addressed the future of Lockwood & Co. and reassured fans that there are more seasons to come, provided that Netflix renews the show.

"The story in the books is very well-plotted," he explained. "Jonathan Stroud solidifies the world and thinks of clever ways to explore it the more the books go on. It really goes somewhere, and it does have an end. So yeah, we’d love to do more," stated Joe Cornish.

What could be the plotline for Lockwood & Co. Season 2?

If Lockwood & Co. Season 2 is produced, it is likely to pick up from the third book in the series, 'The Hollow Boy.' In the first season, the audience was introduced to Lockwood's hidden door, which holds secrets about his past. The season finale left the door open for exploration, hinting that season 2 could see Lockwood finally sharing the contents of his secret room.

Apart from this, the Bone Mirror could also be a central focus of the second season, as Lockwood, George, and Lucy try to unravel its secrets. Additionally, the trio will have to uncover the group behind the Golden Blade, led by Luke Treadaway, who posed a threat to Lockwood and Lucy in the first season.

The third book in the series reveals the contents of Lockwood's secret door, which sheds light on his tragic past. If Lockwood & Co. Season 2 is produced, there is potential to explore Lockwood's backstory and his self-sacrificial nature, as well as his passion for hunting ghosts. The third book explains that the secret room belonged to Lockwood's late sister, Jessica, who was killed by a ghost while sorting through their parent's belongings after their passing. Lockwood, who refused to help, will have to confront his past actions and come to terms with his regret as he opens the door to his emotional past.

While there are many unanswered questions and potential plotlines for Lockwood & Co. Season 2, it is still too early to tell if the show will be renewed. Netflix is likely to take several months to gather relevant viewership data and make a decision.
